WHAT CAUSES SUBWOOFER DISTORTION?

Subwoofers are often referred to as “distortion machines” because their high-frequency response can cause distortion when a strong signal is sent to them. Distortion can occur in two ways: frequency response distortion or amplitude response distortion.

Frequency response distortion results from nonlinearities in the compression circuits. Amplitude response distortion results from a low sound level, while frequency response distortion occurs when the subwoofer is unable to reproduce the original waveform and the low frequencies are compressed. 1. THE SUBWOOFER IS MOVED AWAY FROM A WALL

When the cabinet moves further away from the wall, its volume decreases. The lower the volume of the speaker, the less the bass can be heard, and the more the speaker distorts. This is known as low-frequency roll off (LFR).

2. SUBWOOFER SOUNDS DISTORTED AT LOW VOLUME

When you turn the volume up to full, it distorts the sound coming out of the woofers. There is an amplifier called a “compressor” that controls how much gain there is in the woofers before they are amplified by the woofer box’s power amp stage.
